Fire Safety Tips for Homeowners

Posted on

As a homeowner, you want to do everything in your power to protect your home and your family from the devastating effects of fires. In order to do this, everyone in the home needs to know what to do in the event of a fire, including basic fire safety tips and how to use and maintain fire safety equipment.

Smoke Alarms

It is important to have working smoke alarms throughout your home. There should be at least one smoke detector on each floor, as well as detectors in certain rooms, such as the kitchen and bedrooms. While it is common knowledge that the batteries need to be changed every six months, many people don't realise that they should get brand new smoke detectors every 10 years or so. Make sure that children know what the alarm sounds like, so if they hear it, they know to get out of the home immediately. Check your smoke detector every month to make sure that it is working properly. It is good to have smoke detectors that are wired into other alarms in the home, so if one goes off, they all do, and everyone in the home has the warning they need to get out.

Fire Extinguishers

There are certain pieces of fire equipment that should be inside every home. One of these things is a fire extinguisher, like from Fire Protection Services Pty Ltd. In fact, it is a good idea to have several of these in the home. There should be one in the kitchen, one on each level, and one in the garage or workshop. Fire extinguishers should not be used on all types of fires. They are best used for contained fires, such as a fire in a garbage can. Check your fire extinguishers regularly. They need to be tested to make sure that they are working properly and that they are filled.

Escape Routes

Every family should have regular fire drills, and practice getting out of the house so they know what to do if there is a real fire. There should be several escape routes planned, because you never know where a fire is going to be in the home, and some exits could be blocked by flames or smoke. Practice the fire drills in every room in the home, and make sure that even the youngest members of the family are involved. The whole family needs to be involved in fire safety, including knowing escape routes and how to use fire equipment when it is needed.
